Withdrawal from benzodiazepine and the nonbenzodiazepine drugs after long term use must be carried out gradually over a period of months and sometimes a year or more. Abrupt or over rapid withdrawal from these drugs can provoke unpleasant, severe or even life threatening withdrawal symptoms, including anxiety, psychosis, depression, suicidal thoughts, tremors, muscle cramps and seizures. A gradual withdrawal generally causes only small increases in symptoms and makes the withdrawal process much more comfortable.

We recommend diazepam as the most ideal method of withdrawing from both benzodiazepines and the nonbenzodiazepines or "Z Drugs" as they are sometimes referred to. Diazepam is a benzodiazepine drug with several properties which make it the most suitable drug for withdrawal.
