by Heather Jones
An inspiring story of guilt, despair and eventual triumph over adversity.
Heather Jones’ book takes the reader swiftly through a 12 year period of her life.
It covers her journey from long term prescribed addiction to tranquillisers, through her difficult path of withdrawal and then until she is 13 months off all medication.
The book describes very simply when and why she was prescribed tranquillisers and how their side-effects nearly destroyed her body, her marriage and her life.
It details some experiences with her family, friends, support group and appointments with the medical profession.
It tells in an easy to read style, the struggles of one long term prescribed user and of her ‘seeing the light at the end of the tunnel’.
Heather’s moving story gives the reader a greater appreciation of just some of the problems of prescribed addiction. Her story had great resonance for me and I was able to relate to her experiences in a way that I found strangely reassuring but also practical, as it gave me something real to show my family, demonstrating that I was not alone in my suffering.
In my opinion this is an inspiring book which I found to be beneficial and well worth reading.
During my early weeks and months of withdrawal I kept this book at my bedside for easy referral. For me during my own ‘dark times’, re-reading certain captions, where Heather had suffered similar if not identical symptoms and experiences and survived to tell her story was very reassuring. It helped me stay positive as I struggled with my own ongoing and seemingly alien symptoms and reaffirmed my belief that it was the drugs that were the problem, not me.
